Labour MP apologises after calling First Minister Humza Yousaf 'Mohammed Yousaf'

A Labour MP has apologised after mistakenly calling calling Scotland’s First Minister “Mohammad Yousaf”.

Peter Kyle said he was “mortified” by the gaffe and insisted he would not make the same mistake again.

The Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary had been giving an interview to Sky News about the criminal investigation into SNP finances.

SNP treasurer Colin Beattie and former party chief executive Peter Murrell have in the course of the probe been arrested and released without charge.

Kyle said: "Mohammad Yousaf needs to get a grip on his party because right now it is not capable of serving the people of Scotland."

SNP head of digital Ross Colquhoun tweeted: “Labour often are accused of being out of touch with Scotland, this Labour MP manages to confuse Scotland with Northern Ireland and calls Scotland's First Minister "Muhammad Yousaf" in this under 2 minute clip.”

He later told the Mirror: "I’m always mortified if I ever get someone’s name wrong and I am now. I’m sorry to Humza and promise it’s a mistake I won’t make twice."
