Labour maintain control of South Tyneside Council but Greens and Independents also celebrate gains

Labour maintained its foothold on South Tyneside Council, while the Green Party and Independents also celebrated small gains across a number of wards.

The Labour Party has been steadily losing seats over the past few years across South Tyneside, missing the mark with four wards in 2021 and a further nine in 2019. However, despite losing four seats - the Labour Party retained its majority control over South Tyneside Council with 41 complete seats. Labour also won an extra seat in Harton on the night, as two seats were available due to the death of long-serving councillor Rob Dix in February this year. Michael Henry Clare (853 votes) and Neil Maxwell (833) won both seats for the Labour Party in Harton.

The turnout on South Tyneside was 38,148.
