The Labour party in Neath Port Talbot has elected a new leader at this year's annual general meeting for the Labour group in the area. Councillors voted in favour of Labour member Rob Jones during a virtual meeting held on Thursday, May 19. Cllr Jones of Margam and Taibach had previously held the position for four years before handing the role to Councillor Ted Latham in 2021.

Speaking of his re-election for 2022/23, he said he was honoured to have been elected by his peers and looked forward to the challenges that were ahead. He said: "To be re-elected by my peers as the leader of the Labour group in Neath Port Talbot is an honour for me and I'm very grateful. Obviously there is a lot of work for us in the short term, to settle the council down and move forward over the next five years.
"I'm going to touch base with the former leader now to see how far any negotiations have progressed with other parties surrounding the no overall control issue in the borough. There are a number of groups that are on the council so there's a lot of talking that needs to be done. Labour have opened up the door to the other political groups to enter into discussions to resolve the no overall control issue."
