Labour have officially blocked former leader Jeremy Corbyn from standing as one of their candidates at the next general election.
Current leader Keir Starmer’s move to prevent Corbyn from running was backed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday afternoon.
A Labour spokesman said the leader’s motion passed by 22 votes to 12 on Tuesday afternoon.
This means it is now down to Corbyn to decide whether he will run run as an independent candidate.
Corbyn is a veteran left-winger who has represented Islington North since 1983 and led the party between 2015 and 2019. He had criticised the move as “undermining the party’s internal democracy” before its approval.
The motion says he “will not be endorsed by the NEC as a candidate on behalf of the Labour Party at the next general election”.
Corbyn running as an independent in the north London constituency where he retains significant support could cause a distraction for Starmer at the next election.
