Labour today accuses the Tories of wrecking Christmas as analysis shows the festive season will cost 15% more than last year.
And deputy leader Angela Rayner says the reason is that Conservatives have failed to tackle the cost of living with prices up nine per cent while allowing wages to fall by 2.7%.
She said: “This misery lies at the Tories’ door.
“They wrecked the economy and now in the spirit of Scrooge they’re ruining Christmas for millions of families who are priced out of festive treats this year.”
Labour number crunchers say Office of National Statistics data shows an average family of four with two children pay 17% more for Christmas dinner, an extra 11% on the tree, nine per cent more for lights to decorate it with and £5 more for £100 worth of toys.
Turkeys cost almost a fifth more than they did in 2021, potatoes are up more than 17% and so is the gravy to put over them.
Labour will increase pay by getting the Low Pay Commission to consider cost of living for the first time in its calculation of the National Minimum Wage.
Ms Rayner added: “Our New Deal for Working People will help create a stronger and fairer, high-wage, high-growth economy.”
