Labor’s housing policy is “total chaos” and shows they haven’t learned during their time in opposition, the deputy prime minister says.
Campaigning in Darwin on Monday, where the Nationals hope to snag Lingiari from retired long-term Labor MP Warren Snowdon, Barnaby Joyce likened Labor’s election bid to a children’s game.
“(Labor) believe it’s their turn, sort of like a skipping rope in the yard, like it’s their turn to be the government,” he told reporters.
“You don’t become the government because it’s your turn, you become the government because you fight on policy, you show competency and the Australian people make a judgement.”
Mr Joyce said Labor had nine years to work on their pitch to voters but still struggled to define their message.
“What we’ve seen is total amateur hour, it is absolute amateur hour with the economic policy going forward,” he said.
“It’ll be total chaos, and that’s because they don’t do their homework.”
Labor’s plan to tackle housing affordability would involve a government “help to buy” scheme where the government would provide an equity contribution for 10,000 low income earners.
Meanwhile, the Liberal-National coalition is proposing to give people access to 40 per cent of their superannuation savings to help with a deposit, a plan that is expected to bump up house prices in the the short term.
