Labor should make visa processes faster rather than copy Donald Trump's immigration playbook, according to political rivals and human rights activists who have slammed a move to reopen detention centres for overstayers.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke on Thursday announced the scheme aimed at drawing down the roughly 77,000 unlawful non-citizens in Australia.
