DRC Fashion Week placed La Sape at the center of its sixth edition in Kinshasa on August 15, bringing together fashion designers, stylists and Sapeurs from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the neighboring Republic of Congo. The event used the movement as a way to highlight the shared cultural heritage of the two countries through clothing, dandyism and contemporary design.
The fashion week's focus was La Sape, short for Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, a cultural movement associated with distinctive dressing and dandyism. According to AFP reporting published by Africanews, the movement has roots dating to the 1960s and developed as Congolese men drew on European-inspired fashion while using dress as a means of reclaiming dignity.
For the 2026 edition, that history was brought directly into a runway setting. The collections presented in Kinshasa combined traditional references with contemporary fashion, including bold prints, bright colors and tailored silhouettes.
