Where Things Stand Now
Nearly a week after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, the region's confirmed death toll has climbed to 38, prefectural officials said at a Sunday-morning disaster response meeting. Two of those deaths are still being investigated for a direct link to the quake. Officials had confirmed the identities of 27 victims as of Saturday and said names would be released only as bereaved families give consent. Injuries have held roughly steady at 86, five of them critical.
