Kylie Minogue has said her infamous legal battle with Kylie Jenner over the trademark ‘Kylie’ name was “just business”.

The singer, 54, told Watch What Happens that she had been forced to “protect her brand” when asked about her 2015 legal battle with the reality star.

“When I was named Kylie, I think I met one person older than me called Kylie. So it’s kind of unusual,” Kylie said.

“I’ve spent a lifetime protecting my brand and building my brand so it was just something that had to be done.”

However, Minogue said the pair “came to an agreement”.

Jenner, 24, had applied to trademark the name Kylie for her US clothing and cosmetics businesses in April 2014.

However, the application was later rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office following intervention from Minogue’s lawyers in Australia.

Court documents, made public in 2016, revealed Minogue had opposed the application.

They described Jenner as “a secondary reality television personality who appeared on the television series Keeping Up With the Kardashians as a supporting character”.

Minogue, by contrast, was described as an internationally-renowned performing artist, humanitarian and breast cancer activist known worldwide simply as “Kylie”.’

In 2018, Minogue admitted she was “upset” the quotes had been attributed to her in the media and not her legal team.

“Can you imagine me saying that?” she said at the time. “That was just unfortunate that that is how those lawyers speak.

“So I genuinely hope that it’s understood: That certainly did not come from me.”

Minogue launched her own makeup range in 2019 under the name ‘Kylie’.

The Standard has contacted Ms Jenner’s representatives for comment.
