Kylian Mbappe is set to reveal his future after the Ligue 1 season ends on May 21.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward is out of contract in June and is tipped to join Real Madrid on a free transfer. PSG, however, want him to remain in the French capital and have offered him an eye-watering £800,000-a-week deal.
Mbappe was expected to confirm his next move after PSG secured the Ligue 1 title. Mauricio Pochettino's side finished the job with a 1-1 home draw against Lens on Saturday, yet it's believed he will now wait until the end of the season out of respect.
Real and the French World Cup winner have made no secret of their admiration for one another and the Spanish giants remain confident of finally getting their man. Real tried to sign Mbappe last summer but were met with stubborn resistance from PSG.
As reported by Spanish outlet Marca, the La Liga leaders remain "absolutely calm" about the situation. They believe Mbappe will arrive at the Bernabeu this summer and reject PSG's renewal offers - no matter how lucrative they may be.
But, according to ESPN, "positive" talks between Mbappe's representatives and PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi have taken place in Qatar over the weekend. PSG are backed by the Qatari state, who will not want him to leave ahead of this year's World Cup.
Will Kylian Mbappe leave Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid? Let us know in the comments below!
"In Madrid, they’ve been convinced for three years that Kylian Mbappe would end up at Real Madrid," PSG sporting director Leonardo told Sky Sports in Italy on Saturday evening. "Maybe they’re a little too sure about that?"
He went on to tell Canal+: "Honestly, the discussions were always there.... Kylian, he talks with us, and we have constant communication. I think he is still in a reflection. I think there is a possibility that he stays. He can also leave. But he is thinking."
Mbappe is one of the best forwards in Europe, scoring 165 goals in 213 appearances for PSG since joining the club - initially on loan - from Monaco in the summer of 2017. And, at only 23, is likely to improve over the coming years.
Mbappe has won five Ligue 1 titles, three French Cups, two French League Cups and two French Super Cups at Monaco and PSG, yet he's never lifted the Champions League. That could be the deciding factor in where he plays next season.
PSG have a reputation for collapsing in Europe. They surrendered a 2-0 aggregate lead to Real in this season's Champions League, with Karim Benzema scoring a hat-trick in the final 30 minutes of the tie. Real have no such problems - winning the competition 13 times.
"Nothing has changed," said Mbappe after the Lens game. "So there is nothing to say for now." Pochettino, who will reportedly be succeeded by Antonio Conte this summer, added: " We want him to stay, but we have to wait and see what happens."
