Kylian Mbappe Liverpool transfer stance comes to light as PSG escape route emerges

Kylian Mbappe reportedly rejected the opportunity to join Liverpool last summer after Paris Saint-Germain afforded him the opportunity to leave the club.

Mbappe penned a new three-year contract at the Parc des Princes last year after prolonged links with a move to Real Madrid. Recent reports have claimed that he now wants to leave PSG this year after the striker's future was once again thrust into the limelight in October.

Mbappe's eye-watering contract details were leaked as the Ligue 1 champions posted recorded losses of £317million for their most recent set of accounts. It was the latest problem for the striker in the French capital and comes amid his ongoing reported feud with attacking teammate Neymar.

PSG boss Christophe Galtier staged a first-team meeting in which the two were rebuked, but the relationship between the two attacking superstars appears to be at a low – feeding into the reports that the striker is unlikely to fulfil his contract in the French capital.

After reports questioning his happiness, Mbappe refused to commit his future to PSG. "For now, a second World Cup. After that, I don't know," the France international said ahead of the winter tournament. The open-ended statement left more questions than answers, with the striker not addressing the situation since.

Mbappe was angered that a recent wage payment from PSG was late as relations between the player and club continue to appear fractured. A report in The Athletic has even suggested that the French giants were prepared to let him leave last summer – but the only realistic destination with Liverpool.

The report claims that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and club consultant Antero Henrique were demanding a staggering £352million for any deal – a fee that would obliterate the world record transfer fee, set by Les Parisiens when they signed Neymar from Barcelona for £200m in 2017.

However, Mbappe was not open to this suggestion – indicating that he would not prioritise a move to Liverpool with his heart still set on a future switch to Real Madrid. The same report adds that his decision to remain in Paris and reject Madrid was largely based on political pressure from both France and Qatar.

Liverpool eventually signed striker Darwin Nunez in a big-money transfer last season, while they have also added attackers Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in sizable transfers over the past year. As for Mbappe, his tumultuous relationship with PSG looks set to continue for at least the remainder of this campaign.
