Kylian Mbappe contract clause comes to light opening door to PSG transfer exit

Kylian Mbappe has four months to decide whether he wants to exercise the one-year extension clause on his current Paris Saint-Germain contract.

The 24-year-old signed a new deal last May which was initially reported to run out in 2025, however, it is understood that it will expire a year earlier. Mbappe was subject to interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool before he decided to commit his future to PSG in a contract worth £650k-a-week.

Now, according to L'Equipe via Marca, Mbappe has the option to extend his PSG deal for a further 12 months beyond the 2024 expiry date - but has just four months to trigger that clause. This means the World Cup winner has until the end of June to decide whether he wants to secure another year on his contract.

If not, then Mbappe can then look for a move next January ahead of leaving on a free in the summer. The ex-Monaco forward has been in scintillating form this season, having scored 29 goals in 29 matches for PSG in all competitions.

He also grabbed a further eight goals at the World Cup in Qatar to take his tally up to a mammoth 37 - the most across any player in the top five European leagues, including Erling Haaland. There is expected to be heightened interest in Mbappe at the end of the campaign, especially if he doesn't decide to add another year on his contract.

Real Madrid have been long standing admirers of the forward, having tried to sign him in 2021 but PSG rejected all offers for the player as Lionel Messi made the switch from Barcelona. Mauricio Pochettino wanted a front-three of Mbappe, Neymar and Messi and got his wish when the former stayed and the latter joined the club.

With Neymar linked with a move away from PSG and Messi coming towards the end of his contract, PSG could have an uncertain summer ahead. Chelsea have been tipped to sign Brazil star Neymar given their struggles at the top end of the pitch, while Messi is being touted by Saudi Arabia and MLS clubs.

Although Neymar and Messi are wonderful footballers, it feels as though Mbappe's future is more important considering his age and profile right now. At just 24, Mbappe has already hit over 250 career goals for club and country and is line to smash Cristiano Ronaldo's club record should he continue at his current rate.

He has been extremely consistent for PSG since his big-money move from Monaco in 2017 and could be integral in the club's future and whether they can challenge to win their first-ever Champions League. Mbappe has lifted four Ligue 1 titles but has never won the top European prize in his career - something Neymar and Messi have both done.
