Christian McCaffrey has been on fire to start the 2023 campaign with the San Francisco 49ers. In Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, McCaffrey recorded another another performance with over 100 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Through two games, McCaffrey has 42 carries for 268 yards rushing to go along with six catches for 36 yards through the air. McCaffrey is tallied with Dallas Cowboys back Tony Pollard for the most touches through two games this season with 48.
Buy 49ers TicketsWhile McCaffrey has been busy with a heavy workload through two games, Elijah Mitchell only has five carries this season and they all came in Week 1. Mitchell received zero offensive snaps in Week 2 against the Rams.
During Kyle Shanahan’s Monday morning conference call, he was asked about McCaffrey’s usage and Mitchell’s lack of playing time. The 49ers’ head coach admitted he the 49ers need to do better with their running back rotation.
We definitely got to get Elijah [Mitchell] in there more and do better with our rotation than we did yesterday. That wasn’t the plan going in, it just ended up that way. I’ve got to make sure that doesn’t happen.
With a short week coming against the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football, Week 3 in the home opener could be the perfect opportunity to unleash a well-rested Mitchell.
