Kyle Lafferty signs for Linfield after Kilmarnock contract terminated on deadline day

Kyle Lafferty has signed a short-term deal with Linfield just days after his Kilmarnock contract was terminated.

The striker left the Ayrshire club by mutual consent on transfer deadline day after a decision made by the club board.

Now, he has quickly completed a switch to Northern Irish club Linfield until the end of the season.

A post on Linfield's Twitter account confirmed: "We are delighted to announce the signing of Kyle Lafferty until the end of the season."

The former Rangers and Hearts striker reportedly left the club after a breach of club rules.

A short Kilmarnock statement on January 31 read: "It’s with regret that Kyle Lafferty and Kilmarnock Football Club have parted company by mutual consent.

"We thank Kyle for his service to the club."

Lafferty had served a 10-match suspension at the club after a Scottish FA charge over a sectarian comment on a night out while on international duty.

He returned to action for Kilmarnock in the Viaplay Cup semi-final against Celtic and made appearances against Rangers and Ross County before his shock departure.

On Lafferty's exit, McInnes previously commented: “It wasn’t perfect for me. The timing was awful to be honest but it was a decision made above me, between the board and Kyle.

“Unfortunately it left us short on what we were trying to get but we move on. I really enjoyed working with Kyle and we wish him well but unfortunately for us the timing wasn’t great.

“I feel as if he’s somebody I’ll always be there for and I’ll keep the relationship with him, but unfortunately I’m no longer going to be his manager and we move on.”
