Kyle Lafferty nominated for Scottish Championship Player of the Year award despite only playing 12 league games

Kyle Lafferty has been shortlisted for the Scottish Championship Player of the Year despite only playing 12 games for Kilmarnock this season.

The Northern Ireland striker rejoined Killie just three months ago but has gone on to score eight goals to help the Rugby Park club surge to the top of the table.

Derek McInness' side remain on course for promotion this term, with the club currently two points ahead of nearest rivals Arbroath who have duo Michael McKenna and Thomas O’Brien nominated for the Player of the Year gong alongside Partick Thistle's Scott Tiffoney.

Kilmarnock meet Arbroath this Friday night in what could be a defining clash in this season's Championship title race.

On his nomination, PFA Scotland said: “Kyle Lafferty is nominated due to his prolific form since rejoining Kilmarnock in January.

“The Northern Ireland striker has struck eight times in just 12 league games to take Killie close to an immediate return to the Premiership.”

They added: "Arbroath have enjoyed a remarkable league campaign, and provide two nominees in Michael McKenna and Thomas O’Brien, as they continue their promotion push.”

Lafferty hopes his performances and goals can lead to Kilmarnock returning to the Scottish top flight, and earn him a new contract.

He said: "I am just here to get Kilmarnock up to the Premiership and then if the manager want to sit down with me or the board want to sit down with me then I'm more than happy.

"I wanted to stay last season, things didn't work out so I am back to put things right this season.

"Hopefully it will be a good end to the season."
