KY Department of Veterans Affairs to host online suicide prevention program Friday

Kentucky’s Department of Veterans Affairs will hold a free online suicide prevention program Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Retired Army Major Silas Session is the executive director of the Office of Kentucky Veterans Services. He said active-duty members and veterans are invited – and their family members.

“We have a great lineup of experts. I mean, of course we have we have some a few leaders, post commander for Fort Campbell and Fort Knox are gonna give some words of encouragement.”

According to the VA, statistics from 2020 showed Kentucky veterans were almost twice as likely as their civilian counterparts to commit suicide. Session said Friday’s program aims to reduce such figures by reminding people that help is out there.

“There are some experiences with their military service, that's just adds another thick layer on top of the normal issues that people have in life.”

Anyone can view the program on the Kentucky Department of Veterans’ Affairs Facebook page, but people who’d like to participate via Zoom must scan a QR code.
