Kuwait’s basic food supplies are reassuring and are at their highest levels, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on Wednesday.
It called on citizens and expatriates not to respond to or republish any fake news on social media citing people or unofficial bodies calling on people to store basic food goods, state news agency KUNA reported.
It underscored the importance of taking information from its official sources.
The Ministry affirmed that all relevant authorities are carrying out their duties to ensure the availability of goods and avoid any shortage in supply.
It warned citizens that storing any of these goods will lead to their damage, stressing that consumers should be reassured and purchase only what they need without any “unnecessary” panic.
It further affirmed that it will cooperate with all relevant official authorities to punish all who are spreading such rumors.
Earlier this week, the government announced forming a ministerial committee tasked with enhancing food security to address the global shortage in food supply and price hike.
Minister of Commerce and Industry Fahad al-Shuraian stated after Monday’s cabinet meeting that the prices of commodities will be under his ministry’s supervision and control to prevent any surge in prices and maintain food security.
Shuraian said Kuwait imports at least 95% of its food products.
He explained that the global changes, represented in the increase in the prices of energy products and freight, the prevention of some countries from exporting their products and other factors, have contributed to the high demand and the lack of supply.
