Amid escalating anti-regime offensives in both the northern and southern regions surrounding Damascus, Kurdish-led fighters have reportedly advanced into eastern parts of Syria. The Kurdish forces, who currently control the northeast of the country, established autonomy after enduring a decade of civil war. However, they now express concerns that this hard-won autonomy may be jeopardized by Syrian opposition insurgents who initiated an offensive last week.
While the primary target of the recent offensive remains the Assad regime, Kurdish fighters have voiced apprehensions about the potential spillover of violence into their territory. The Deir Ezzor Military Council issued a statement on Friday highlighting the perceived threats to the security of their people and the Deir Ezzor region. They specifically pointed out the activities of Turkish occupation-backed mercenary groups and ISIS militants in the Deir Ezzor desert.
In response to these concerns, the Deir Ezzor Military Council disclosed that they have deployed fighters in Deir Ezzor city and west of the Euphrates River. Their stated objective is to safeguard the security of their people and the region amidst the evolving situation in Syria. Notably, the Syrian defense ministry has refrained from providing any official comments on the recent developments in the eastern part of the country.
