Kroenkes prove money not the key to Arsenal progression as Todd Boehly oversees Chelsea plight

Arsenal have risen to become a side challenging this startling Manchester City monster of a club whilst their West London rivals continue to plummet further and further down the Premier League table. After the purchase of the Blues by Todd Boehly and the ludicrous levels of investment, it has been proven that money alone is not the key to success.

Now, it should be said that Arsenal themselves have made significant investments in their squad however the level of financial injection by Boehly has been comparatively far bigger than the Gunners’ spending. Stan Kroenke, the Gunners owner, was known previously for not being too keen to release the purse-strings

However, the executive shake-up at Arsenal since the 2018 takeover has been significant. Manager Mikel Arteta has come in, Edu Gaspar became technical director before his promotion to sporting director, several scouting changes were made and recently the Brazilian has promoted a number of staff to support him ahead of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Boehly is preparing to employ his fourth head coach in the space of less than a year. Sacking Thomas Tuchel in favour of Graham Potter, who in turn was relieved of his duties and former head coach Frank Lampard was put in place with an expectation Mauricio Pochettino will take over for the new season.

Amongst the coaching chaos, the Blues have spent close to £600m on 16 players in two windows including pricey loans for Denis Zakaria and Joao Felix. £70million-plus moves for Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Wesley Fofana are also included in the spree.

Meanwhile, Arsenal didn’t even break their summer transfer spending record in 2022 with the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira the major deals. Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho arrived in January to strengthen their cause and future.

There’s no doubt when looking at the spending afforded to Manchester City that they’ve risen to become one of the best sides in the world however they, unlike Chelsea have done so through smart decision-making, appointments and recruitment. Arsenal are now looking to arrest the slump of previous years toward the end of Arsene Wenger’s era and the Unai Emery period with a project under Mikel Arteta that has led the club to where it finds itself now.

Although a trophy could elude Arsenal this season, there’s no doubt that the progress made during the campaign has got them a huge step closer to winning a title in the near future compared to any other season in the past decade-plus. Chelsea meanwhile will be out of the Champions League next season and trying to tie all their loose ends together with a new coach who himself lacks trophy-winning pedigree in England.
