Kota Takai: Tottenham confirm first January deal as forgotten signing agrees Bundesliga loan

Tottenham centre-back Kota Takai has joined Borussia Monchengladbach on loan until June 2026.

The young Japan international is yet to make a first-team appearance since moving to north London from Kawasaki Frontale for £5million in July - a record sale for the J-League.

The early days of his Tottenham career have been hampered by injuries. He suffered through a bout of plantar fasciitis shortly after signing, and later picked up a thigh injury.

He made his return to the pitch in early December, though, playing 45 minutes for Spurs’ Under-21 outfit in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Leyton Orient.

Takai, 21, has joined up with Monchengladbach’s warm-weather winter training camp in Belek, Turkey, and is expected to train with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday.

Monchengladbach have not been at their best this season, and sit 12th in the Bundesliga after 15 matches - just five points above the relegation zone.

Takai could make his debut as early as January 11, when Augsburg visit the Borussia-Park.

Speaking after closing the deal, Monchengladbach head of sports Rouven Schroder said of Takai: “Kota is a tall, physically strong centre-half who also has good pace.

“He’s got what it takes to help us in the immediate future. We’re delighted to welcome our new No14.”

Takai signed a five-year contract upon joining Spurs, which will expire in 2029.
