Kolkata: Territorial Army jawan’s body reaches home in N 24 Parganas

KOLKATA: The body of Territorial Army (TA) jawan Narayan Chanda, who died during evacuation operations in flood-affected Assam on Saturday, was brought to his Asokenagar home in North 24 Parganas late on Sunday.

Chanda (42), a resident of Kalyangarh near Ramakrishnana Seba Samity at ward 3, was posted in Guwahati for over three years.

According to Army sources, Chanda had left his quarters at Borjhar on his bike on way to a rescue mission. “The entire road was muddy and slippery due to the floods. Suddenly, a cow came before his two-wheeler. Trying to avoid a collision, Chanda lost control and rammed a lamp post. He was declared brought dead after being taken to a hospital,” an officer said.

After Chanda’s body arrived, a pall of gloom descended on his Asokenagar home while hundreds of locals came to pay their last respects.

His wife Swapna is yet to come to terms with the tragedy. “I last spoke to him on Saturday minutes before he left. He told me he was going to join duty. He was supposed to come home next Friday. But he returned home in a coffin,” she said, breaking down.
