Kochi: Former jail building to become museum

KOCHI: The Cochin Heritage Zone Conservation Society, which had been inactive for the past several years, has designed a slew of projects to ensure heritage protection. At a meeting held last week, the society authorities have decided to implement various projects which they expect would contribute to the heritage protection in Kochi.

It was on Thursday that the society met and decided to implement various projects for heritage protection. “Heritage protection clubs will be constituted in government and aided schools in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry areas. Other programmes like heritage tours and heritage camps will also be organized. We expect that all such projects will see the revival of heritage protection in Kochi,” said Bony Thomas, who took over as the nodal officer of the society from June 1.

A former jail building at Fort Kochi, where many freedom fighters were housed during the colonial regime, will be converted into a museum. Another project will be to mark the centuries-old trees at Fort Kochi in a scientific manner. Construction of a gateway to the heritage town of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry also is among the future plans of the society.

The meeting also decided to take stringent action against food court operators who have defaulted rents to the society.

Authorities will introduce a new logo for the society. Entries have been invited from school and college students in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry areas for making a new logo. Select entries will be given a cash prize of Rs 5,000. The entries should reach, ‘The nodal officer, Cochin Heritage Zone Conservation Society, 1/484 E Tourists Amenity Centre, Kamalakkadavu, Fort Kochi-682001’ within 12 days. The entries can be emailed to heritagezonefortkochi@gmail.com as well.
