Over £18m will be added to Knowsley Council’s spending after plans were approved tonight.
The proposals, for investment in projects across the borough ranging from cemetery extensions to town centre development, were hailed as “real bricks and mortar" investment by Knowsley's cabinet member for finance and resources Cllr Jayne Ashton.
Presenting the plans to cabinet at a meeting which took place at Huyton Municipal buildings, Cllr Ashton said as well as funding for additional school places, money was also being spent on disabled facilities, highway improvements, the extension of Knowsley cemetery and further work on the Shakespeare North Playhouse.

With over £90m earmarked to be spent over the next three years, Cllr Ashton said: “It is impressive at the best of times but even more so given the challenges we’ve faced."
£45m is set to be spent this year, including on improving transport links, LED street light replacement, and projects at Halsnead Village and Huyton town centre.
Some of the spending will be from future capital receipts, some from earmarked funds, others from grants, section 106 payments and other financing initiatives, according to information provide in the cabinet report.
Cllr Ashton said: “It is real bricks and mortar evidence that further demonstrates the scale of this council’s investment in our borough.”
Before the plans were approved by cabinet, leader of Knowsley Council, Cllr Graham Morgan, added: “Under challenging circumstances, what a programme that’s been put together.”
