A knifeman has been jailed for 23 years for attempted murder after he stabbed an unarmed cyclist in the head, fracturing his skull. A jury returned a majority verdict in the case of Amir Miran, 23, after a trial at Nottingham Crown Court in January, and sentencing took place on Friday (March 10).
The victim, Daniel Walicki, suffered injuries to his back, shoulder, and head on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in July last year after he had made rude comments to Miran, the court heard. He was unarmed when the incident happened after he had been stood with his push bike outside the Co-op, on the corner of Sneinton Dale and Port Arthur Road, Sneinton Dale, when he was approached.
Sentencing Miran, Judge Steven Coupland said the victim was stabbed four times. "In essence this was a prolonged revenge attack using a weapon in a public place," he said.

"It is only pure luck that this action did not result in his death."
His co-accused and partner, Anna Wolska, 39, who has two children, was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and sentenced to five years. The judge said the jury were satisfied she directed Miran to attack Mr Walicki and prevented his friends from helping him during the attack.
"The jury were satisfied you intended him to be caused GBH as he was." Miran and Wolska, of Colwick Road, Sneinton, denied all charges but were convicted after trial.
They both left Mr Walicki wounded at the scene after he suffered two stab wounds to the back of the chest, near his shoulder blade, a single stab wound to his left shoulder, and a stab wound to the left side of his head. Many members of the public made calls to the emergency services, and police and ambulance services quickly arrived at the scene.
Mr Walicki was taken by ambulance to hospital, where further medical investigation revealed just how severe this alleged attack had been. The jury heard CT scans showed serious internal injuries had been inflicted, which included a left-sided skull fracture underlying the stab wound.
All these injuries had resulted in Mr Walicki requiring a lengthy stay in intensive care, and other hospital wards.
Miran was found guilty of additional charges of having a bladed article, and assault, causing bodily harm, to a second man, and lesser concurrent sentences were imposed on those. The judge said to round off the incident Miran had approached Mr Walicki's friend and punched him for no good reason, causing a black eye and cut.
