Kliff Kingsbury first had an opportunity to be the head coach of an NFL team back in 2019. Things didn’t quite work out between him and the Arizona Cardinals in the end, and he is now the offensive coordinator for the upstart and surprise Washington Commanders. And if his current team continues on its upward trajectory, he could be one of the named added to the coaching carousel during the upcoming off-season.
Kliff Kingsbury Could Get Another Head Coaching Gig
Whose job could he take? One of the hottest seats in the NFL head coaching ranks belongs to Matt Eberflus. After going a combined 10-24 in his first two seasons at the helm of the Chicago Bears, the team has limped out to 4-5 in a season of elevated expectations, and his job security is in serious jeopardy.

And who would be the leading candidate to take over the reins as the franchise’s new head coach? Perhaps they’d choose someone who has some familiarity with their young, #1 overall draft pick quarterback.
Kingsbury has done some outstanding work with some very notable quarterbacks. He is currently being praised for his work as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders and the immediate success of rookie pass thrower Jayden Daniels. His resume includes working with Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Case Keenum, and others, including Caleb Williams.
Bears Rookie Caleb Williams Has Familiarity With Kingsbury
Williams had already won the Heisman Trophy the prior year when Kingsbury was hired at USC. But the quarterback has credited some of his success in being a #1 overall pick to his work with the young coach, who helped him maintain his elite draft status during the 2023 campaign. Given that Kingsbury had the title of “offensive analyst”, Williams hasn’t exactly played in one of his offenses, though some of the schemes and terminology could be familiar.
There should be a handful of head coaching vacancies to fill during the coming off-season. Both the Jets and Saints have fired their lead men during the 2024 regular season, and questions surround Brian Daboll in New York and Mike McCarthy in Dallas.
There will be plenty of names available on the open market, too. Will Bill Belichick return to the sidelines? Is this the year that Ben Johnson finally takes his opportunity to leave Detroit? Guys like Aaron Glenn, Joe Brady, and Brian Flores could throw their hats into the ring as well.
