ATLANTA — Klay Thompson scored 37 points and Jordan Poole recorded his first career double-double, but the Warriors still managed to fall, 121-110, to the Atlanta Hawks Friday at State Farm Arena.
After having four Warriors scorers finish with 22 or more points in Wednesday’s win over the Miami Heat, Thompson and Poole (24 points), who recorded 61 points combined, scored more than 55% of Golden State’s points against the Hawks.
The Dubs? More like the duds.
The Hawks scored the final 11 points of the first half to take a two-point lead heading into the locker room. They continued the momentum into the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 32-16. During that run, Hawks guard Trae Young hit his 700th career 3-pointer, making the 23-year-old the youngest player in league history to reach that milestone.
The Hawks held an 18-point lead going into the fourth, and despite a late rally, pulling within three, Atlanta held on for the win.
Young finished with 33 points on 12-for-20 shooting. Forward Danilo Gallinari added 25 points.
Along with extending his career-best 20-point streak to 12 consecutive games, Poole finished with a career-high 10 assists.
Coach Steve Kerr opted for a smaller lineup against the Hawks, starting rookie Jonathan Kuminga in place of center Kevon Looney, who came off the bench for the first time this season.
The Warriors (48-26) had a chance to establish more distance between the third and fourth seeds of the Western Conference after the Charlotte Hornets beat the Utah Jazz, 107-101, earlier in the evening. Instead, Golden State remains in third place, two-and-a-half games ahead of the Jazz and three games behind the second-place Memphis Grizzlies.
The Warriors are scheduled to practice Saturday afternoon in Atlanta before heading to Washington D.C., their fourth destination of this five-game road trip. The Washington Wizards host the Warriors Sunday at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. PT.
