KK dead at 53: Bollywood star collapses and dies hours after live show

Popular Bollywood star KK has died after collapsing on the return to his hotel following performing for an hour on stage

Singer KK, whose full name is Krishnakumar Kunnath, died this evening in Kolkata, India.

The 53-year-old had performed at Nazrul Mancha auditorium but after he came off stage the singer fell ill, The Hindu reported.

The father-of-two was reportedly taken to a private hospital, the Calcutta Medical Research Institute in south Kolkata, where he was pronounced dead.

Speaking to The Hindu, a hospital official said: "It’s unfortunate that we could not treat him."

KK died of a heart attack and was taken to the hospital at 10.30pm local time, according to Times of India.

It is understood that KK was survived by his wife and two sons, who are expected to arrive in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Following the tragic news, India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, shared his condolences on Twitter.

He wrote: "Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK.

"His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups. We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti."

Delhi-born KK released his first album, titled Pal, in 1999, and was known for his enthusiastic live performances.

He recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali among other languages.

Tributes flooded social media as fellow Bollywood stars shared their condolences.

Singer Harshdeep Kaur tweeted: "Just can’t believe that our beloved #KK is no more. This really can’t be true. The voice of love has gone. This is heartbreaking."

Meanwhile actor Akshay Kumar shared: "Extremely sad and shocked to know of the sad demise of KK. What a loss! Om Shanti."
