A kitten could lose her leg after being caught in an illegal “gin trap” for three days. Six-month-old Otis was only rescued when her owner heard wailing as she lay helpless in a neighbour’s garden.
Frantic Louise Wilson, 23, followed the cries and found her pet at the back of the garden stuck in the trap and under discarded greenhouse glass panes. Louise, of Ayr, had to call grandad Alex, 72, to release Otis.
The puss now has a large area of exposed bone and the vet said if it doesn’t heal, it could result in the leg being amputated. The matter has been reported to the SSPCA, which is investigating, as the traps have been illegal since 1958 and have claimed the lives of many pets and birds.
Otis’s absence has weighed heavily on Louise’s two-year-old daughter, Kayla. Louise said: “I was pretty worried the first night then I gradually got extremely concerned.
“I spoke to neighbours and put up posters and leaflets. My hope was running out by the end of the week.
“There was a rat infestation round here within the last few years and the trap may have been put down for that. Whatever the reason, it was a cruel and stupid thing to do when there are pet cats in the area – you can see that from the way Otis has suffered.”
