Plans are being made to create a warm space in Kirkcudbright.
The community centre committee wants to hold three sessions a week to allow people “to come together to sit, chat and socialise for a few hours where they don’t have to heat or use electricity at home”.
An application for funding for the project was discussed by Kirkcudbright common good fund’s sub committee on Thursday, with £,7500 allocated to the scheme.
A report reveals a need has been identified for the warm space by a number of community groups, particularly from Kirkcudbright Development Trust.
The project would offer soup, tea and coffee and also access to the internet for anyone who needs it.
There are also plans for advice sessions and homework clubs.
The report states: “Having the facility available all year round will create a space where families can go, alleviating some of the stress and anxiety associated with the cost of living.”
The total cost would be around £20,000.
The funding is needed to upgrade the kitchen, buy catering equipment and food and help with the costs of the centre.
