Kirkcudbright set to cook up a storm with annual Food Festival

Kirkcudbright will be cooking up a storm when some of the region’s top chefs visit the town for its annual food festival.

Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities has organised a fantastic programme over the weekend of October 22 and 23 to celebrate everything food related.

Among the attractions are demonstrations from a selection of the finest chefs, a farmers market, street food and a range of other events including film showings.

Summer festivities chairman John Blaikie said: “Dumfries and Galloway is home to some of the countries’ finest chef’s and we are delighted that many of those will be joining us in Kirkcudbright. The food festival is one of our most popular events and this year will be back to its full potential after a few years of limitations as a result of the pandemic.

“The chefs are fantastic, the market is packed with the best producers, there is a great selection of street food and the extra events over the weekend, all with a food theme, are set to be brilliant.”

The demonstrations will take place in a purpose built marquee in Harbour Square and kick off on Saturday morning with Chris Haney from the Selkirk Arms.

There are a number of demonstrations each day, each with its own theme, ensuring there is something for everyone.

On Saturday Lesley Atkins from The Nourishing Space will explore the secrets of the Mediterranean food and Lifestyle; Ashley Rainbow of Casa Mia will be creating Mexican street food, including pulled beef brisket chimichangas, and Douglas Lisi from Tighnamara Hotel is back with some mouth watering Italian dishes including sirloin steak thermidor with tiger prawns.

Sunday’s demonstrations include Ed Pook, chef and owner of Mr Pook’s Kitchen in Castle Douglas, who will be making smoked lamb and foraging ingredients; Anup Domanic, pastry chef at Gather bistro, will be creating the ultimate sweet treat, a melting moment chocolate sphere.

Also appearing will be Jonathon Brett, executive chef of The Globe Inn in Dumfries, who is hotly tipped for a Michelin star very soon.

Jonathon will be making scallops with crab, loin of lamb and a pineapple pain perdu dessert.

Sunday will end with a children’s workshop, more details for which can be found at the Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities Facebook page.

The Dark Space Planetarium will be showing two food themed films over the weekend with the movie The Hundred Foot Journey starring Helen Mirren on Friday evening and on Saturday, the film Chef, with Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jnr, Sophia Vergara and Dustin Hoffman.

Tickets can be purchased from the planetarium at https://www.darkspaceplanetarium.org/events/

Demonstration tickets are on sale at https://ksf.scot/tickets and are set to sell out.
