Kirkcudbright's Stewartry Museum set for long overdue upgrade

A 19th century museum in Kirkcudbright is set for a long overdue upgrade.

Stewartry Museum in St Mary’s Street is to have eight new windows installed along with a further seven refurbished including repainting.

The work is being scheduled after Dumfries and Galloway Council’s planning committee granted listed building consent last week.

A report tabled at the meeting explained that the museum is a traditional two-storey detached category C listed building which is located within the Kirkcudbright Conservation Area.

David Suttie, the council’s planning and building standards manager, said: “Overall this is a refurbishment which is going to improve and sustain the character of the listed building.

“We’re happy to recommend approval unconditionally.”

Councillors unanimously approved the listed building consent.

Stewartry Museum was originally founded in 1879 and housed on the top floor of Kirkcudbright Town Hall.

The museum then moved to its current building, which was designed by architect Robert Wallace, in 1893 due to the increasing size of the museum collection.

The museum houses the Siller Cup – one of the oldest surviving sports trophies in the UK.
