According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to stay with the team for the rest of the 2023 season.
There have been discussions in the media about the Vikings potentially trading him to the New York Jets or another franchise. With the Vikings starting 1-4 and his time in Minnesota likely over after the season, a deal makes sense.
Schefter’s phrasing of the tweet was interesting.
Vikings’ QB Kirk Cousins is expected to remain in Minnesota this season and will not look to waive the no-trade clause in his contract — short of changing unforeseen circumstances.
The line “short of changing unforeseen circumstances” says a lot. The rough translation is “we don’t expect to be 1-7, but if we are, we might be willing to listen.”
Unless something crazy happens, don’t expect the Vikings to be willing to move Cousins or for him to waive his all-important no-trade clause.
For better or worse, Cousins will (likely) be the starting quarterback the rest of the season.
