JAIPUR: In response to law minister Kiren Rijiju flagging the issue of huge pendency of cases before top judges of the country, Chief Justice NV Ramana virtually put the blame on the Centre saying not filling up judicial vacancies and lack of judicial infrastructure are the root causes of the problem and expressed “hope and trust” that the government would address the issue.
At the 18th all-India legal services meet organised by the National Legal Services Authority, the CJI said that in India’s criminal justice system, the process is a punishment. From indiscriminate arrest to difficulty in obtaining bail, the process leading to prolonged incarceration of undertrial prisoners needs urgent attention, he added.
