Kings Park volunteers issue plea for locals to help out and protect city's special green space

An organisation which looks after Stirling’s historic Kings Park is urgently seeking help from volunteers.

Charitable organisation Friends of Kings Park was founded 17 years ago to support and improve the city’s principal public park.

However, it issued an appeal this week for new committee members.

The group’s secretary Dorothy Wilson said: “We operate with a small committee of Stirling residents and urgently need more committee support as there is still much to be done to improve and develop the park.

“We are very stretched, which is why we need more committee members to help us continue our work to make the park an attractive, welcoming, green space for everyone’s enjoyment.

“Kings Park public park is very much a city park. We are looking for help from residents from in and around the city, to strengthen our small organisation and be a voice for the future of the park.”

Over the years the Friends of Kings Park has worked with Stirling Council in implementing the Kings Park Masterplan to upgrade the park.

It has been involved in projects including the restoration of the historic ironwork fountain and drinking wells at the park’s entrance; improvement to the footpath network and park infrastructure; upgrading of the skatepark, additional provision of inclusive play equipment for children with additional support needs; supporting conversion of the Kings Park sports pavilion into a café and – in partnership with Stirling High School – planting a tree for the Queen’s Green Canopy Platinum anniversary.

Friends of Kings Park also established a community heritage apple orchard within the park and help to maintain the popular Peace of Mind Garden in the community garden area.

Dorothy pointed out that the garden has become overgrown and neglected over the past two years due to Covid restrictions, but the organisation hopes to bring it back to a manageable condition.
