King's Coronation: Methody College school pupils to join Westminster Abbey choir for historic event

Pupils from Methodist College in Belfast will be among the choir performing at the King's Coronation service in Westminster Abbey.

Seven girls will join choral singers from with the choirs of Westminster Abbey and HM Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace along with girls from Truro Cathedral Choir.

Methody principal Jenny Lendrum said it represented a fantastic opportunity for the Lower and Upper Sixth form pupils and it was something the school was very proud of.

"We are just delighted that we have them all representing us," she told Belfast Live.

"It's been unbelievable, they have had to learn so many pieces.

"It was in February that we got the call through and we had auditions then, with the girls practising pieces of music over the mid-term break."

Following those auditions, the seven pupils - Emily Wilson, Hannah Harvey, Evie Mills, Sarah Johnston, Maggie Gilmartin, Hannah Gheel and Nia Phelan - were chosen and since then have been busy preparing for the historic occasion.

They have also been focussing on schoolwork in an important set of years for them.

"From when we picked the seven girls, they have been rehearsing every day and they have been over to Westminster Abbey too to rehearse," said Ms Lendrum.

"They were rehearsing here in school with our Director of Music, Ruth McCartney, and then we had the conductor, Andrew Nethsingha, he was over with us and our girls have been over with him.

"They do have revision time in the morning because they are all girls who are doing examinations here when they come back."

Their proud Principal said it was fantastic to think of Northern Ireland having such a link to what will be a momentous occasion.

"There's just so much excitement - we're just so excited that they're representing our school and that they get the privilege of performing at the highest level because they're in a choir with the best choral singers that they could ever be amongst," she said.

"There have of course been commissioned pieces, so Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has commissioned a piece for example, and they will be singing it with the rest of the choir, so there are premieres which are going to be happening throughout the service which the Methody girls will be a part of, which is just really, really exciting.

"We're really, really thrilled to have that Belfast connection and to represent Northern Ireland is just really important, it's great."

The King will be crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort, on Saturday, May 6, at Westminster Abbey in London. As well as the ceremony a host of other events have been planned throughout the weekend. There is also an extra bank holiday on Monday, May 8, to mark the occasion.

The King's Procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey will take place before the Coronation Service, which starts at 11am on Saturday. Once the service is over, it will be followed by the Coronation Procession from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace.
