King Charles cracked jokes as he attended a formal state dinner with Donald Trump as part of his US visit on Tuesday (28 April).
The historic state trip, the King’s first to the US as monarch and the first state visit of any British monarch since 2007, marks the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Raising a toast during the state banquet, His Majesty joked that the lavish event was “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party”, referencing the 1773 protest which preceded the American Revolution.
From making light-hearted jabs at Mr Trump’s new White House East Wing ballroom project, to joking that the US should be thanking the UK that they aren’t speaking French, his speech left attendees in fits of giggles.
