King Charles' plans for Royal Family shake-up including new roles for Harry and Andrew

The new King is reportedly planning a major role shake-up in the Royal Family.

The Queen's death leaves three of the five counsellors of state as non-working royals under present legislation. But now, Charles is allegedly looking at making changes which will affect Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Princess Beatrice.

He is reportedly looking at making changes to the law to prevent non-working royals being counsellors of state. This means the three non-working royals would all become ineligible to stand in for the monarch.

The 1937 Regency Act dictates the spouse of a monarch and the four adults next in line to the throne can act as counsellors of state. Should the monarch take ill or be indisposed, Councillors are able to stand in temporarily.

The Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Sussex, and the Duke of York, as well as the Duke of Edinburgh before his death all stood in at some point towards the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign. Currently, since Charles' accession, Queen Consort Camilla, as the King's spouse, and Princess Beatrice, as the next adult in the line of succession to the throne, would be eligible to become counsellors of state.

However, The Telegraph reports it is believed the King recognises the incongruity of having a trio of non-working Royals eligible to fill in should he be abroad or incapacitated. With this in mind, he allegedly wants to take steps as soon as possible to ensure that the law is changed.

His siblings Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and the Princess Royal, Anne, are likely candidates to fill two of the positions. It is also possible the Princess of Wales could be included should the new requirements not focus solely on the line of succession.

There could also be a wider reformation that would attempt to clearly define the position of working and non-working royals. Parliament would have to pass any change in legislation.
