King Charles inherits Buckingham Palace as future of royal properties unclear

Buckingham Palace has served as the official residence of the UK's monarch since the reign of Queen Victoria, almost 200 years ago.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, King Charles III could become the seventh head of state to live in the famous London residence between 1837 and the present day if he chooses to move.

He currently lives only metres down the road from the royal headquarters at Clarence House.

But as the new king he must decide now where he is to live as well as what to do with his large portfolio of royal properties, including various other palaces and castles around the country.

His Majesty's decision could well affect the rest of his family and where they reside.

Charles said a few month ago that he would live at Buckingham Palace, despite being unimpressed with the place and complaining that it was too large and draughty, reports the MailOnline.

One suggestion has been that the King could use the 775-roomed palace for business matters, events such as garden parties and banquets and investitures.

He would then stay on living in the more compact Clarence House just off The Mall with Queen Camilla.

As well as Buckingham Palace, Charles has inherited his mother's other official residences including castles such as Windsor in Berkshire, Balmoral in Scotland and Hillsborough in Northern Ireland.

The Prince and Princess of Wales reportedly delayed moving their family into Windsor Castle nearby Adelaide Cottage following the death of William's grandmother.

Sandringham House in Norfolk - where the late Queen traditionally spent Christmas time - is now also part of the new monarch's vast amount of properties as is Highgrove House in near Tetbury, Gloucestershire.

The King bought the property in 1980 and he is thought to be very attached to the property and its gardens.

Other inherited residences include apartments in Kensington Palace and St James’s Palace, where Princess Beatrice has reportedly been staying in the latter with her family in September 2021

The Georgian property has since been used by Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie and her family.

Eugenie's father, Prince Andrew, lives in the Grade-II listed Royal Lodge and has done since 2004 with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.

The 30-room palace is just over three miles from Windsor Castle and played an important part in the formative years of Queen Elizabeth II.

It remains to be seen what call the King will make over his newly-inherited properties but it has been reported that at the very least he and his wife will not immediately live in Buckingham Palace while its major renovations are being completed.
