Buckingham Palace unveiled a new portrait of King Charles III in military attire on Saturday to mark Britain's Armed Forces Day. The palace described His Majesty as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Services and showcased him donning his Field Marshal No1 Full Ceremonial Frock Coat adorned with medals, sword, and decorations.
The portrait was captured by royal photographer Hugo Burnand at Windsor Castle in November 2023. Burnand, known for his work at Charles' coronation in May 2023 and his wedding to Camilla in 2005, has a longstanding relationship with the royal family.
Queen Camilla also expressed her gratitude towards service members in a video message, commending them as a source of inspiration, reassurance, and pride. She specifically acknowledged their dedication during their recent visit to Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, highlighting the enduring spirit and qualities within the armed forces.
Camilla extended her appreciation to military families for their unwavering support, recognizing the sacrifices they make as loved ones of service members. She concluded her message by saluting all service members for their commitment and valor.
Despite facing health challenges, King Charles III resumed his public engagements last month, attending events such as Trooping the Colour and hosting foreign dignitaries. Military service holds a significant place in the royal family's history, with Charles having served in the Royal Air Force and Navy during his time as the Prince of Wales in the 1970s.
Earlier, the palace had released Charles' first official portrait, which sparked mixed reactions due to its avant-garde style. The painting faced a minor incident of vandalism by animal rights activists at a London gallery, although it remained unharmed thanks to protective measures in place.
