Dogs have been mixing with the royal family for centuries - and King Charles' pets will become the first rescue dogs to live in Buckingham Palace. But Bluebell and Beth, both Jack Russells, are not the only dogs the new Monarch has owned during his time.
Many of his dogs have been immortalised in royal photographs, including his Jack Russell, Tigga, who became somewhat of a 'celebrity' in the 1990s, often spotted in unofficial Christmas cards sitting alongside William and Harry. However, he didn't get to spend as long as he would have liked with all his dogs, as he had to rehome his yellow labrador, called Harvey, in an attempt to "appease the desperately unhappy Diana".
Charles and Diana married in 1981 but ended up separating in 1992 after a tumultuous time together. They finally divorced four years later.
The labrador is said to have sparked arguments between the couple, according to royal biographer Penny Junor. She said: "He even gave away his faithful old labrador Harvey because Diana thought he was smelly."
Seconding this claim, royal author Sally Bedell Smith believes the dog was given up because it reminded Diana of Charles' previous life.
Harvey ended up living out the rest of his life with one of Charles’ advisers.
Shortly before Diana's untimely death in 1997, her butler revealed the Princess was planning to adopt a golden labrador.
Speaking on Instagram, butler Paul Burell said: "In her childhood, the Princess had many pets, and she longed to have a dog.
"In the last summer of her life, we had made plans for her to buy a golden labrador, but that was not to be."
King Charles married Camilla, who has become Queen Consort following Queen' Elizabeth II's death, in April 2005.
The royal couple currently own two Jack Russells, Bluebell and Beth, who were both rescued by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, where the former Duchess of Cornwall is Royal Patron.
To mark their 15th wedding anniversary in April 2020, King Charles and Camilla posed for a picture alongside their Jack Russells at Birkhall, their home on the Balmoral Estate.
