More than 60 shops in Wirral were found to still have Kinder Eggs and other chocolates linked to a salmonella outbreak on their shelves last year.
The chocolates were discovered during checks by the Wirral Health Protection service run by Wirral Council to almost 300 shops across the borough. The chocolate products had been recalled by manufacturers, meaning shops were supposed to have taken it off the shelves, but they were still found to be on sale in 64 retailers.
More than 100 cases were linked to an outbreak of salmonella in April 2022 connected to the products across the UK, with most of the cases being in children under five.

After the visits by the protection service, all 64 shops removed the products from sale lowering the risk to children in Wirral according to the borough's health protection strategy report.
The report said: "The Food Standards Agency was concerned that products may still be available which should have been withdrawn as they were a risk to health. Salmonella infection can be severe, and many children affected in this outbreak have been very unwell and hospitalised.”
