Kind Midlothian local gets elderly neighbour a fleecy blanket to keep him warm

Locals in Midlothian have been asked what they would like for Christmas as a local furnishing store has continued an initiative to help those in need during the festive period.

Dunelm has warmed the hearts of customers nationwide with their Delivering Joy appeal that aims to gift presents to schools, care homes and refugees for the third year running

Customers can visit their nearest Dunelm and pick a tag off their Christmas tree with the age of a person and what they would like to be gifted this year. In return, you can help out by buying the item and dropping it off back at the store for them to deliver it.

On their site, Dunelm say: "Help yourself to a tag from the Delivering Joy tree in your local store. Each one offers an insight into who’s going to be receiving your gift and as they’re all local residents, you’ll be bringing joy to someone nearby.

"Once you’ve sorted their present, pop it in an unsealed gift bag and take it back into the store by Sunday 11th December. We’ll deliver the gifts in the run-up to Christmas."

One local resident who took part said she gifted a 90-year-old man a fleecy blanket to help keep him warm during the winter, but felt so sorry for him that she added in some chocolates and a gift voucher.

Speaking anonymously, she said: "It was my good deed for Christmas. I didn't know anything about it until I went in to the store at Straiton on Thursday and read about the initiative on the board. I picked out the first tag and a 90-year-old man had asked for a warm blanket which broke my heart.

"I felt I definitely had to go out and buy a big cosy blanket for him and added in a few extra things as I couldn't stop thinking of him being cold and potentially alone this Christmas. I think it's such a nice idea from Dunelm and hopefully more people get involved."
