An employee at an Ayrshire supermarket giant has spoken of her pride at being recognised for excellent customer service.
Asda Cumnock colleague, Leah Gordon, has been praised by her colleagues for using her knowledge of sign language to communicate with a customer who needed assistance in store.
Leah, aged 18, who started at the store in April working on the pizza counter, noticed an elderly customer was struggling to communicate with other customers and colleagues, so she went over to help.
Leah noticed the lady was trying to sign, and with knowledge of BSL from primary school, she was able to successfully communicate with the customer.
Leah took the customer around the store and helped her pick up everything she needed.
The customer is usually accompanied by a carer, so was extremely grateful for the help.
Leah said: “I noticed the lady was having problems communicating and I was really happy to be able to help her.
“It is such a shame when people are unable to communicate and I am no expert, but the little sign language I had meant a lot to her.”
The kind-hearted colleague’s service did not end in store, as she also spotted the lady outside, and conscious of the icy conditions, Leah stepped in to help.
Leah added: “It was really icy outside and I wanted to make sure she got home safely, so I walked her back to her house.
“I’m really pleased that I was able to make a difference to the customer’s experience in store.”
Leah’s good deed didn’t go unnoticed as assistant store manager, David Kane nominated her for a Service Superstar award.
David said: “We are very proud of Leah; she is a great colleague and is constantly going above and beyond to help our customers and colleagues.
“I was not surprised when she stepped in to help and I had no idea she was able to sign, it was a very welcome surprise.
“We were glad she was there and was able to assist the customer. She is star and a real asset to the store. Thank you, Leah!”
Leah’s kind act has been shared on Asda’s official Facebook page with many customers praising Leah for her outstanding customer service.
One customer, Christine Deane, commented: “Well done Leah, it’s so nice to see young people helping others. And you knowing sign language, that was amazing.”
Another customer, Gwyneth Aylott, commented: “Well done Leah for helping the lady out, not only with her shopping but also seeing her home safely 10/10 for excellent service.”
