Kim Kardashian wore Monroe's dress 'for minutes' and wasn't trusted to sit down in it

Kim Kardashian has opened up about the effort that went into her wearing one of Marilyn Monroe’s historic dresses to the Met Gala – as it is revealed she only wore the gown for a few minutes.

The 41-year-old mum-of-five says she was terrified of accidentally destroying one of America’s most priceless pieces of history when she managed to convince the current owners of the dress that she should be allowed to wear it to the most obnoxious party on earth.

For Monday’s vapid fashion event – which was taking place at the same time details leaked that women may soon lose the legal right to get an abortion in America – saw Kim wearing the same dress that Marilyn wore in 1962 to sing Happy Birthday to then-president John F Kennedy.

The dress itself is currently owned by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum after selling at auction in 2016 for $4.8 million (£3.8 million) – but Kim used her personal connections to persuade the museum to allow her to wear it to the fashion event – which had an ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’ theme.

Vogue magazine reports that Kim only wore the dress for a mere matter of minutes when she arrived at the event, changing into a replica once she got inside The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Speaking to the magazine about her anxiety over destroying the dress, and why she changed out of it as soon as she could, Kim said: “I’m extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history. I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of any damage to it and I won’t be wearing the kind of body make-up I usually do.

“Everything had to be specifically timed and I had to practice walking up the stairs.”

She also explained why she wanted to wear the dress for the theme, saying: “The idea really came to me after the gala in September last year. I thought to myself, what would I have done for the American theme if it had not been the Balenciaga look? What’s the most American thing you can think of? And that’s Marilyn Monroe

“For me the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang Happy Birthday, to JFK, it was that look.”

The report also claimed that Kim spent an astonishing 14 hours having her hair dyed blonde to complete her look.

While Kim also had to diet for weeks in order to fit into Marilyn’s original dress having previously thought their differences in size would balance out so it would fit.

Kim banned herself from sugar and carbs, took daily runs on a treadmill and wore a sauna suit twice a day in order to slim down to fit into the outfit.

Meanwhile, a backlash against the Met Gala was ignited on Monday as commentators were appalled the rich and famous were out demanding attention for themselves at a time when the rights of women across were being threatened.

Details have leaked that the iconic 1973 USA case Roe v Wade could soon be overturned meaning abortion will become illegal across America.

One worried American took to Twitter to comment: “The craziest thing about the MET Gala outfits is the fact that the Supreme Court is literally overturning Roe v Wade as we speak.”

And another woefully commented: “The Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade while the whole country is distracted by an inconsequential event celebrating extreme wealth is, unfortunately, the most symbolic representation of America rn.”

While senator Elizabeth Warren wrote: “An extremist Supreme Court is poised to overturn #RoeVWade and impose its far-right, unpopular views on the entire country. It's time for the millions who support the Constitution and abortion rights to stand up and make their voices heard. We're not going back—not ever.”
