There are certain events in life that require going all out. Like your wedding day. Or attending a black-tie New Year's Eve soiree. The Met Gala also falls into the category, if you're ever lucky enough to score an invite. So imagine our shock to see Kim Kardashian underwhelming on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet.
Kardashian attended in a custom Maison Margiela ensemble. The bustier top and floral chain-mail dress are both amazing, but that gray cardigan feels very out of place. Despite the fact that John Galliano presented similar looks at his now iconic Maison Margiela Spring 2024 Haute Couture presentation.
She's certainly no stranger to the Oscars of fashion. (This year marks her 11th appearance.) She actually has a mixed sartorial record. For her debut back in 2013, the then-pregnant reality star stepped out in a floral gown with matching gloves and heels designed by Riccardo Tisci. Ironically, it would have definitely fit in with this year's "The Garden of Time" dress code. Kardashian was universally panned for the look and even memes were created.
She played it safe for the 2014 Met Gala. Her dark teal Lanvin gown was simply styled with T-strap heels.
Kardashian opted to go grand the following year in a sheer Peter Dundas creation boasting a feather train.
For "Manus × Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," she shined in a sparkling silver custom Balmain dress.
In 2017 she kept it simple with a white Vivienne Westwood corset creation and no jewelry.
Her custom Versace gold dress included two embroidered crosses to tie into "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."
She really wowed in 2019 in a custom Thierry Mugler number with an exaggerated corset waist. Her soaked strands only enhanced the look.
Kardashian went to the opposite extreme in 2021 wearing an all-black Balenciaga look that covered everything, including her face.
She brought the drama literally to the 2022 Met Gala. Kardashian stunned in one of Marilyn Monroe's dresses. She only wore it on the red carpet, but the dress was reportedly returned damaged.
The 2023 Met Gala theme honored Karl Lagerfeld, but instead of flaunting Chanel or Fendi, Kardashian opted for a Schiaparelli corset gown with numerous strings of pearls.
