Kyle Lafferty struck a stunning winner to boost Kilmarnock’s title bid – then dedicated the goal to tragic fan Colin McCue.
Killie-daft Colin sadly passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest following the Ayrshire derby last Wednesday night.
The Rugby Park side paid tribute to him during the game at home to Dunfermline Athletic with a minute’s silence and wore black armbands.
Colin’s son Scott was in attendance for the 2-1 cinch Championship victory and both Lafferty and Killie boss Derek McInnes met him after the match to offer their condolences. Lafferty also kindly gave his shirt to Scott.
And the Northern Irish striker raised his black armband in tribute to Colin after his sublime overhead kick bagged a vital three points.
Boss McInnes read out a letter from Scott to the players before the match – and Lafferty says it spurred them on to ensure they won in his memory.
He said: “Obviously it doesn’t matter who you lose, it’s going to affect you.
“We were told after the game on Wednesday what had happened.
“All players respect all fans, and obviously it affected us.
“But we received the letter and the gaffer read it out before the game on Saturday. You could see in everyone’s eyes that we wanted to go out and put on a good performance and get the three points – so it was only right to dedicate it to Colin.
“I spoke to Scott after the game and I gave him my shirt. Obviously getting three points won’t heal his hurt, but knowing that the lads were all behind him must have been good.
“I can imagine it was hard for him to come, three days after losing your dad. I’d imagine it was bad enough leaving the house let alone coming to the game.
“But he came here, we knew he was here and I think that’s why we put in a good fighting performance.”
