Kieran Trippier tells Manchester United what skill Mauricio Pochettino may be missing as manager

Former Manchester United transfer target Kieran Trippier has provided the Reds with an insight into what the players could expect from Mauricio Pochettino if he is installed as the club's next permanent manager.

The Argentine, who is currently in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, is one of the frontrunners to become the Reds' next manager, along with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag. Pochettino was identified as a suitable candidate several months ago and United saw an attempt to lure him to Old Trafford back in November knocked back.

Since then, Pochettino has continued to be consistently linked with replacing Ralf Rangnick ahead of next season. He is understood to be keen on a return to England and becoming the next occupier of the United managerial hot-seat.

Although the former Southampton boss has not yet experienced a trophy-laden managerial career, he has impressed in his previous jobs, particularly in England. During his time at Tottenham, he turned the club into title contenders and guided them to their maiden Champions League final.

He also enjoyed getting plenty of success in developing homegrown talent, including Trippier. The right-back thrived under his methods and was a key member of what Spurs achieved under him.

However, Trippier, now at Newcastle United, has admitted that he failed to receive the encouragement and the arm around the shoulder he required whilst experiencing a difficult final few months in north London. He eventually left to join Atletico Madrid.

Trippier told True Geordie Podcast : "Every player is different and I played with players who sometimes needed that arm around them, and that is normal. But players are different.

"But with the way that Diego Simeone worked [at Atletico Madrid], everyone was the same and we had big characters in that dressing room. But like I said, every player needs an arm around them sometimes."

On if he got an arm around the shoulder at Spurs, Trippier continued: "I'm going to be honest, not really. I spoke to a few of my team-mates at the time and, to be fair, we had a great team then.

"It was a great set of lads and unbelievable dressing room. Poch, don't get me wrong, is an unbelievable manager and he has done a lot for me, of course he has. I respect him, that's normal. But I just felt that there could have been a little bit more [to come from him]."
