Defender Kieran Tierney revealed the officials had no clear explanation for the 94th-minute penalty that robbed Scotland of a friendly win over Poland.
Arsenal man Tierney had headed Steve Clarke's men into the lead in the second half.
But Krzysztof Piatek went down under the challenge of Craig Gordon before dispatching the last minute penalty to earn a draw in the match hastily arranged for the benefit of the Ukrainian people.
Tierney made a beeline for the Irish officials at the end, approaching first the linesman then man in the middle Robert Hennessy, and revealed he didn't get a straight answer.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Tierney said: "The penalty at the end wasn't a great way to finish the game.
"I was asking, 'who was it, was it Craigy or Grant?'
"And I don't think he knew, he never said anything.
"I never saw it, from my eyes it looked like nothing but that (minimal contact) is why I was asking.
"But I never got an answer. I know it's a friendly but this could have been a competitive game easily enough and you want to see games like that out when you're winning by one goal, against a team that's higher seeded.
"So we're obviously gutted to lose the goal and the clean sheet."
Tierney had to hesitate after his header hit the net and the reason far that was two-fold.
The first reason was because he didn't even know if there was a video referee waiting to rule it out.
And secondly because he couldn't believe he had actually scored with his head.
He laughed: "I didn't even know if there was VAR!
"So for a minute I was thinking, 'is this onside or offside?'
"But obviously it's good to get a first goal. That's me got one goal and one own goal for Scotland so that's me even!
"It was just the shock! When do I score a heeder?
"So obviously I was buzzing, great ball in by John McGinn and the set-piece coach, Austin (MacPhee) works a lot on that.
"The manager said if I don't score this game or the next game I'm going back of the park so luckily I got it."
