One family told the ECHO they heard around "three or four shots" being fired. One woman said: "They did sound like fireworks but were so loud. I heard the shots and then heard screeching like someone was getting away."

The man added: "It sounded like three bursts. I saw two people get away from the scene and one other person chasing after them with a helmet on." Other neighbours described their shock and said how their children are now scared following the incident.

Speaking to the ECHO, one woman said: "It's not fair we have to live like this, all because of selfish people." Another neighbour added: "There's so many babies who live around here, anything could have happened.

"My kids don't want to go out anymore. They're scared. My son was panicked and doesn't want to go out." Merseyside Police said four reported suspects, riding two motorbikes, left the area after the shooting.

There have not been any injuries reported at this time. Merseyside police have put a cordon in place as forensic examination takes place. Potential witnesses are being spoken to with door-to-door and CCTV enquiries also in progress.

Detective Inspector John Mullen from Merseyside police's firearms investigation team said: "Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this incident are at a very early stage, but we believe it was targeted. What we do know is that the whole community in will be saddened to wake up to the news that there has been a shooting on the streets of Moreton, and I am sure they will be keen to help us establish exactly what happened, why and ultimately who was responsible.

"Our officers are working around the clock and will be out talking to the community and gathering information so that the people responsible for this can be brought to justice. Thankfully there have been no reports of any injuries following this shooting, but we all know the risks firing a gun can pose."

He added: "We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at about 11.15pm and witnessed the incident, saw the offenders on two motorbikes or saw anything suspicious to contact us. If you happened to be driving in the area and have dashcam footage, please check it and let us know if there is anything that may assist our enquiries.

"Merseyside Police will not tolerate the use of firearms on our streets and through targeted operations, stop checks, warrants and searches, our work to take them out of circulation goes on every day of the year. That work is often carried out as a direct result of information supplied by the public, so tell us what you know about firearms in Merseyside and we will do the rest."
